Seven weeks of no running ended on 12/30/2010.  Stress fracture during Chicago Training left me in a boot.  Aqua Running became my outlet.  4-5 days a week in the pool running the lanes in deep water kept the fitness up. 

Today started the process of working myself back to marathon training.  January 24th will begin Boston Marathon training.  I will be on a 12 week program to get myself to the line and to finish.  My goal time is unknown.  The time goal will be assessed during VO2 max training during the 7th week of the 12 week program.  In the meantime, I have designed a program to slowly work in the running that incorporates aqua running, cycling, Ellipical, treadmill and trail running.

Ran on the treadmill.  EZ pace at 9:00's.  Few aches and pains but nothing dramatic.  The stress fracture is constantly on my mind as when I run.  Eventhough it is healed and I am building back slowly I need to be aware not to favor the leg.  This will only breed problems in other places down the road.

5 inches of new snow in Georgia (north of Atlanta).  Ran 5.5 this morning on the roads.  No cars and the snow was soft.  Half way through the run it began to sleet.  Excellent run, reminded me of my winter runs in New England.

Swam 3,450M this morning. 

Strength training at lunch.

Going to run 11 miles tomorrow morning with Bob.  Bob have 17 miles to accomplish.  He will pick me up in front of the gym and I will run the remaining 11 with him.

Ran 11 miles with Bob.  The temps were 15 degrees.  Bob met me after he ran 6 of his 17 miles.  The roads and sidewalks were ice.  Ice everywhere.  We took our time on the 11 miles watching every step we took and every car that went speeding past us.  After 5 days of snow and ice you would think Georgia drivers would understand to slow down.

The pace average was 8:37's and my HR averaged 144.

15 Mile Marathon Pace run.

Ran Route 141 North.  The hills simulate the Boston Route.  7 miles at 8:01 average and 8 at 7:15 average.  I needed to see where I am to plot a time for Boston.  With a 7:15 pace that puts me at around a 3:10:00 marathon.  With being out for 8 weeks I think this is realistic.  Will continue to train for a 3:10 for the next couple of weeks.

8 mile general aerobic run.  Maintained HR between 125-138.  Course had some hills in it, but slowed the pace to hold HR.

15 mile run at 10% to 20% over MP.  I have to say this was not a good run.  Meetings yesterday left me without food for 6 hours.  Water was limited and dinner was late.  Woke at 4AM to run.  The temps were mild at the start but progressively got colder.  By mile 6 it was cold.  I had shorts and a long sleeve tech shirt on and could not get warm.  Add, no food, eating late (Mexican) and then "Montezuma's Revenge" every other mile.  At mile 5 the Garmin ran out of juice so pace and HR were not registering.  I turned around, headed back to the gym and finished up the last 5 miles on the treadmill.   The first 10 was an average 8/mile and the treadmill 5 miles was at 7:30/mile. 

A couple of elite runners have been pushing me towards the Newton Gravitas.  With me being a mid-sole/toe runner they state this is a natural shoe for my form.  At $175 for the shoes I question their overall performance.  I am leaning towards the Saucony Kinvara which I have heard has some attributes to the Gravitas.  The price at $90 is more palatable as well.  

The Brooks Ghost are a light shoe, but minimal cushion in the forefoot which is causing foot pain after 15 miles. 

Need to pull the trigger soon on a pair for Boston.

Chattahoochee Runner's Club 10K.  Rainy and cold, but after you got moving the rain felt good.  Warmed up about a mile or so.  Added some strides to loosen up the legs.  The goal was not to hit it hard, but to run a sub 40.  Ended up with a 39:34 and 1st in my AG.

Ran the Publix Half this morning.  10,909 runners ran the Half Marathon.  Hooked up with the 1:30 pace group.  I had been training Evan for 11 weeks to get him ready for his first Half.  The last thing he told me as the gun went off was that he was going to stick with the pace group.  Within a quarter mile he was no where to be seen (in front of the pace group).  Evan took off way too fast.  The course was technical and hilly.  Hung with the pace group, felt good and confident.  I figured by mile 10 I would start to surge ahead from the group to make it under 1:30.  By mile 11 I saw Evan.  He was struggling.  I went by him and told him to latch on and we can finish this together.   He moaned and tried to hold but fell off within a quarter mile.  I told him that the 1:30 pace group is about a minute or so behind, gather yourself and latch on to the group.  When I finished Evan came in about 1 minute later and broke the 1:30 time he was shooting for.  Good race, good pace group and Publix did this race up right.  A lot better than ING ever did.

Woke up this morning and almost bagged this run.  18 miles after a Half Marathon race.  Crazy!  But, the legs were not sore so I figured I would give it a try.  As I was running I kept thinking, "why a long run after a race?"  It is in the plan and I am sticking to the plan.  Then at mile 14 I knew why.  I was fatigued and my head was not into it.  With 4 miles to go, I had to buckle down and grind out those last few miles.  Mental toughness.  That was the reason.  What got me throught those last 4 miles was thinking about a rest day tomorrow.  Every step I was closer to the rest day.  That was my reward. Averaged 8:05's for the 18+.  Hilly course and the quads are fried with 31 miles of verticle climbing in the last 2 days.

Back at it again this morning.  Less than 30 days until Boston.  Ran 7 miles at a Zone 2-3 pace (Z-3 due to the hills).  On the way back the plan was to run 6 X 1,000M's at 5K pace.  Legs felt a little weak so I back off on the pace but was still at VO2 Max.  Finished all 6 and headed back up the Webb Bridge Hill to the gym.  Stretched and core.  Need to fit more core in.  3-4 times a week are needed.  On the half on Sunday I felt myself pulling to one side up hills.  Couldn't keep a straight line to conserve energy.

Went to bed thinking I only had a nice 6 mile recovery run on Thursday morning.  Waking up a bit earlier than the alarm, I checked the plan and I was scheduled for 15.  Had to switch gears and get ready for an additional 9 miles.  The run was good up until the last mile.  Bonked a little making my way up the long climb to the end of 15.  Thinking that I only had 6 miles I ate a lighter dinner than I would have if I was running 15.  Paid for it.  Averaged out the 15 at 7:56/mile.

Held the run until 8:30AM.  It had poured rain all night and even at 7:30AM the rain, lightning and thunder was pretty bad.  I ended up running the 20 alone.  Two of my friends were supposed to run with called me and told me that they ran the 20 miles on Saturday.  I was upset that they blew me off and didn't have the guts to tell me that they changed plans on Friday.  These kinds of situations you really find out who your true friends are...Finished the solo 20 miles at an average pace of 7:42's.  3 seconds per mile too fast, but the HR was in the zone.

The temperature last night at 10PM was 75 degrees.  Tornado warnings, heavy rain, wind, lightning brought the temps down to 40 degrees at 6AM.  The wind was blowing so hard that the car was being blown around while driving to the gym.  I decided to bag the outdoor run for the treadmill.  Though the run was uneventful, it sure beat trying to fight a 50 MPH head wind.

Wow!  What a race!  The experience in running this race this year was very important to me.  This year my wife, sister and 13 friends ran the Boston Marathon.  The day was perfect, the crowds were awesome.  My wife and sister qualified for 2012 as well!  To have been able to be in Boston with my wife and family and friends made this a special day that I will never forget.

Congratulations! Great to see a 'local' runner on here ... I live in Cumming! I qualified last October but did not register in time ... but will be there in 2012, as I have a 10 minute cushion on my time ... thanks to just turning 45! Perhaps I'll see you at a local race.

Master's Swim: 2,950M.  I have read a number of articles by "runner's" who state that swimming is not a good means of fitness for runners.  I do not believe this.  I don't believe you can replace running with swimming, but as a recovery or cross training day, my fitness levels are higher than any run day.  I think it is an individual preference and each runner should incorporate into the training cross training that works best for them.

Took a few days off, slept in.  Focused on eating and drinking.  Felt good this morning, but it seems you trade one thing for another.  Left heel is in pain.  Must had pulled the tendions in my foot.  Ran 10 this morning.  5 EZ, 5 at Lactact Threshold.  Decided this week to run purely on heart rate to see if I can control the bout of overtraining (though I have stuck to the plan every mile).  Ran with Amy B this morning.  We started out on the 5 together but I told her once mile 5 came I was increasing the effort to 91% of my Max HR for the remaining 5 miles.  She was fine with it.  Run was good and foot did not hurt this time.

Spoke too soon on the foot.  I have been icing and heating.  Wore "the boot" last night.  I woke up in tremendous pain in the left heel.  Walked around the house to warm it up and it felt better.  On the run it was a different story.  Felt a jabbing pain every step.  Re-adjusted my stride which helped, but every once in a while, the pain would coming back like someone hit my heel with a hammer!  Heart rate never topped over 146 with a pace of 7:45's.

Logging a lot of miles this week.  I had a 5 mile recovery run built in for this morning.  As I woke at 4:50AM, I thought about swimming.  I had not been in the pool for over a month since I started logging miles on the road.  I am paying for a Master's Swim program and besides, it is only 5 miles in the grand scheme of the total training.  Sorry, NB 890's.  Left the shoes at home for goggles and a swim suit.  Master's starts at 5:30AM.  The crowd had been light this week since everyone is tapering for a few big triathlons coming up over the weekend.  The workout was a endurance workout:

 800M at Half Ironman Pace
